June 18 History Stuff and Interesting Facts

Interesting Facts

In 1978 the CDC sent out ads to do research on promiscuous homosexual men. This research was to give them experimental Hepatitis B vaccinations. In 1981, the first cases of AIDS was confirmed in the same cities as the vaccine was given.

The Colorado Rockies have a dinosaur as their mascot. Apparently, during construction of Coors Field, they found fossils from a triceratops, so that's why their mascot is a dinosaur. Interesting.

History

1975: Fred Lynn of the Red Sox crushed the Detroit Tigers with 3 homeruns, 10 RBIs, and 16 total bases in one game. And I still remember seeing him hit a ball so hard and fast that it smashed the clock on the wall at Tiger Stadium. I was there. Great ball player. :)

1812 - War of 1812 begins as US declares war against Britain. This war was an interesting one for me. This led to the burning of Washington DC, when the British burned a ton of important buildings. Dolly Madison stayed behind until it was almost too late so that she could save some of the important documents in Washington. There was what some people say was a hurricane, or a tornado, but anyway, a horrible storm went through when the building were set afire and helped to put out the fires and chase the British away. This war also led to our National Anthem.

1873 - Susan B Anthony was known for her part in the Women's Rights Movement. She spent most of her life fighting for the right to vote. She was fined $100 for attempting to vote for President on this day.

1879 - W H Richardson, a black inventor, patented the children's carriage, and all of us parents are truly grateful.

1979 - Billy Martin became the Yankee's manager for the second time. This was to replace Bob Lemon.

1981 - A vaccine to prevent hoof & mouth disease was announced. Hmmmm And yet, my daughter got it several years later, and I don't think there ever was a vaccine for it given out.

1981 - The AIDS epidemic is formally recognized by medical professionals in San Francisco, California. Yeah, after the above information. :(

1983 - The seventh Shuttle Mission-Challenger 2 launched with Sally Ride. She would be the first US woman out in space.

June 17th History

June 17

I guess I never realized how many different things happened each day. I just thought I would let everyone know all the things about today you might not have known. Things like:

National Holidays (who comes up with this stuff?)

National Watergate Day - Okay, how many of you know that today is National Watergate Day? Do you have any clue what that is? Well, today marks the anniversary of the day that the Democratic Party's headquarter in the Watergate apartments was broken into in 1972. This would be the scandal that would eventually make President Richard Nixon resign. He would resign on August 9, 1974. (And they have a National Day for a break in? Really?)

National Eat Your Veggies Day - This was created, of course, to get you to eat your veggies, or at least be aware that veggies exist. It comes in the middle of Fresh Fruits and Veggies Month.

Here are some odd National Food Holidays. I can see them being this month.

National Ice Tea Month

National Papaya Month

National Dairy Month

National Fresh Fruits and Veggies Month

Here are some Celebrity Birthdays:

Barry Manilow, Born 1943
Venus Williams, Born 1980

Here are some things that happened today in the past. I left out a lot of things, but these were things that caught my eye.

1978 - 33 years ago today, Cedar Point Amusement park introduced the roller coaster named the Gemini. It has side by side trains so they sort of "race" each other. When the ride opened, it was the highest roller coaster at 125 feet tall. This week the same park opened up the Wind Seeker at 301 feet. How times have changed.

1967 - Marks the Longest doubleheader in baseball. It lasted 9 hours and 15 minutes and was betwee the Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics.

1963 - On this day the Supreme Court ruled that the Bible would not be read and there would be no prayer in public schools. :(

1960 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox hit his 500th home run. :)

1954 - Rocky Marciano beats Ezzard Charles in 15 rounds for the heavyweight boxing title.

1950 - This marks the very 1st kidney transplant in Chicago.

1944 - This is Iceland's Independence Day. In 1944, it was announced that this would be the day.

1928 - Amelia Earhart left Newfoundland to become the first woman to fly Atlantic (as a passenger in a plane piloted by Wilmer Stultz)

1938 - Japan declared war on China.

1885 - The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City.

1882 - A killer tornado spread through a 200 mile path to kill 130 people in Iowa. :(

1880 - John Ward, Providence, pitched perfect game against Buffalo

Flag Day and Flag Facts

June 14th is Flag Day in the United States. The 13 star, 13 striped flag was adopted as the Official US flag June 14, 1777 by the Second Continental Congress. Many people think that the flag started out with the stars in a circle, but it actually started out the way they are now - lined up.

The first official flag in the world was from Sweden and was adopted in 1569. It was mostly a battle flag.
